The general salary range for this position is $170 - 210k. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Vice President, Major Gifts for the Philanthropy department. In this position you will develop and implement fundraising strategies, policies, and procedures to grow major gift revenue. You will direct, support, and enable the Philanthropy Officers, Stewardship, and Prospect Development teams to develop clear strategies and readiness to achieve successful solicitations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and directs the overall strategy of the Major Gift department ensuring that the strategy aligns with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities. Manages the department to ensure that staff achieve their revenue and professional goals, including providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development. Identifies and develops potential successors;
  • Manage a portfolio of principal major gift prospects at the $100,000+ level using a Moves Management framework. Plan and implement major donor cultivation and solicitation strategies to secure funding for institutional priorities and to reach annual budgeted goals;
  • Oversees research and prospect development functions to cultivate a pipeline of potential major donors. Optimizes fundraising outcomes by utilizing data-driven decision-making across department;
  • Oversees the creation of fundraising and stewardship materials;
  • Track and monitor the team’s performance. Develop, prepare, and monitor monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to track and document team performance;
  • Engages in cross-departmental planning projects and meetings. Resolves complex problems for the department and implements solutions that require cross-departmental coordination;
  • Champion philosophical norms and culture across the region;
  • Serve as member of the Philanthropy Leadership Team alongside the VP of Corporate Giving and VP of Planned Giving;
  • Collaborate with the Philanthropy staff and program staff across the organization to build and sustain a productive and successful major gift fundraising culture;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, Applied Sciences or Business or a related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience required;
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in fund-raising and fund-raising management required;
  • Management experience in a related field, which has included management and leadership responsibilities for remote staff, strategy development and execution, and fiscal and budget accountabilities, preferably in the animal welfare arena required;
  • Continuing education in the field of fund-raising and development with emphasis on development research methods, database management, and fund-raising practices highly desired;
  • Strong business acumen with strong negotiation and mediation skills;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to translate information into a meaningful, understandable context and message, regardless of the format (e.g., documents, public speaking situations, presentations, etc.);
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Proficient in fund raising databases, with through familiarity and facility with CRM;
  • Strong analytic skills, ability to think strategically and good attention to detail;
  • Membership in professional fund raising societies, such as Association of Fund Raising Professionals, CASE (Council for Advancement of Education) AAPR (American Association of Prospect Research), or Independent Sector, strongly desired;
  • Willing and able to travel as needed.
