Who are we?
We are USA Ultimate. A member of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), we serve as the official national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States. USA Ultimate is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization with its national headquarters in Colorado Springs. Founded in 1979 as the Ultimate Players Association, USA Ultimate is the largest flying disc organization in the world with more than 63,000 members, including athletes, coaches, observers and league and event organizers.
As one of 100-member nations of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) – the international federation for flying disc sports and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), USA Ultimate is responsible for fielding our U.S. National Teams for major international events, including junior, U24, elite and masters’ world championships and the World Games.
More than 18,000 student-athletes compete on 800-plus teams in USA Ultimate’s college division. More than 15,000 adult athletes compete on 600-plus teams in USA Ultimate’s club division. USA Ultimate helps to organize and support youth ultimate around the country.

What do we need?
We are seeking a new CEO to continue to lead the explosive growth of the sport. By connecting with, strengthening, and building new local and state-based organizations, the CEO and staff will continue to organize incredible events for all our members including our college and adult clubs and build upon the footprint of excitement, enjoyment at the recreational level and improve upon our internationally high performing members of our US Teams.
 
What’s the ideal candidate background for the new CEO?
We believe this CEO will enjoy Ultimate and have an engaging and public persona, the vision, plus the technological, business, marketing and communication expertise to grow membership, and participant engagement through various constituent state-based organizations and age groups, such as juniors, high schools and keeping our core participants in colleges and adults competitions nationwide. One needs a business mind wrapped inside a community engaged non-profit ideology to succeed. These skills will in turn drive investment to help us better connect with, service and continue to grow the sport of Ultimate.

Responsibilities of the CEO:
As part of our mission of advancing the sport of Ultimate in the United States by enhancing and promoting character, community and competition, the CEO will be responsible for accelerating sport participation by empowering local communities, schools, universities, etc. to provide the most exceptional opportunities for youth, as well as new and developing players and coaches. Therefore, USA Ultimate seeks a dynamic, experienced growth-oriented CEO who will drive increased participation, interest, enthusiasm, and support for ultimate and USA Ultimate through community, communication and marketing, and thus help us realize our mission and goals.
 
Reporting to the board of directors, the position of CEO is a full-time, paid position in its corporate staffing structure. The CEO will be primarily responsible for:
  • Ensuring USA Ultimate continues to be the trusted source and leader in the sport of ultimate.
  • Leading and growing the participation and impact of USA Ultimate as an organization in terms of building the technological tools and processes to communicate with all participants and create valuable member benefits. Additionally, greater members and participation will lead to an increase in revenue, partnerships, which in turn will increase the overall impact and growth of the sport.
  • Providing both day to day and strategic leadership for the organization. Working directly with the board and our
  • 20 staff and contractors, establishing long-range goals, strategies, plans to reach those goals, and build and maintain appropriate policies for the association.
  • Interfacing with all players, instructors, officials, tournament directors, fans, vendors, sponsors and other stakeholders.
  • Developing good working relationships with professional league leaders, and other providers in the sport. Representing USA Ultimate as the national governing body for the U.S. Ultimate community and serving as its spokesperson. This individual will be the day-to-day leader of the organization, tasked largely with expanding the membership, participation and commercial revenues of USA Ultimate. This person ought to be a visionary. The selected individual ought to have a “do-anything” mindset yet be disciplined to fulfill short-term goals.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Leading our current strong team of executives. This individual will continue creating an environment that fosters great performance and positive morale.
  • Reporting to the Board and keeping them abreast of important developments.
  • Substantially growing our membership base.
  • Developing and substantially growing multiple revenue streams, including technology, media and corporate partnerships.
  • Overseeing USA Ultimate’s fiscal activities, including budgeting and reporting.
  • Assuring all legal documents, contracts and agreements are complete, filed and in compliance with necessary rules, regulations and laws.
  • Preparing annual evaluations of direct reports to the CEO.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A passion and thorough knowledge of the sport of ultimate or growing an Olympic sport.
  • Proven experience as a President/CEO or C-Level marketing, corporate development, business development, and/or sales executive of a for-profit company, sports national governing body, or non-profit organization having annual revenues in excess of $5 million.
  • Proven, broad and leverageable network of C-level executives in two or more of following industries: sports, advertising, technology, broadcast media, digital media, marketing and sales.
  • Experience reporting to a non-profit board.
  • Proven track record of leading the negotiation and closing of multi-million-dollar commercial agreements, joint ventures or strategic partnerships.
  • A collaborative approach to business, charisma, and strong work ethic.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of non-profit corporate governance and general management best practices.
  • The ability to motivate, grow, retain and attract top talent.
  • Strong knowledge of finance, budgeting, financing and cash flow.
