The role of the Academic Advisor is to provide general academic advising to students. This position will also share advising-based perspectives to colleagues and public stakeholders, such as students, employers and prospective students. The Academic and International Student Advisor will help students identify options, set academic, career and developmental goals and assist students with making progress toward those goals. This position will also serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for Immigration functions.

The Academic and International Student Advisor receives direction and supervision from the Director, Advising and Student Success.

 

Examples of Duties

Advising:


  • Collect, understand and provide general information concerning the academic and demographic profiles of students, including retention data.
  • Participate in programs and initiatives that facilitate student engagement, career development, success and retention.
  • Address early alerts for students on assigned caseload.
  • Utilize technology to effectively monitor student progression toward credential completion.
  • Utilize data for strategic planning and collaborate with other College operational units on matters that affect student recruitment, success and retention.
  • Provide referrals to other campus and community resources when applicable.
  • Serve as a liaison to a designated population of high school students.
  • Assist students with career exploration, academic planning and registration.

Designated School Official :
  • Maintain accurate student files with necessary nonimmigrant information.
  • Develop, schedule and conduct international student orientations and mandatory international student check in meetings.
  • Process international student paperwork such as RCL's, I-20 extensions, transfer paperwork, terminations and work authorization requests using the SEVIS database system Conduct OPT workshops and create OPT and CPT I-20's.
  • Approve international student non-profit sponsor letters and maintain nonprofit sponsor database.
  • Assist students with reinstatement paperwork.
  • Ensure international students are meeting SEVP enrollment requirements and maintaining course enrollment consistent with federal regulations.
  • Respond to SEVIS alerts and SEVIS registration requirements to ensure that SEVIS records for Students are maintained.

 

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Two years of experience working in a post-secondary educational setting.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with international students and SEVIS in a post-secondary position.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 

Extensive Knowledge of:
  • The mission of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and the Appreciative Advising model.
  • Transfer policies and procedures.
  • Student resources (e.g., Academic Support Center, Disability Support Services, Financial Aid).
  • The role of advising in supporting the mission of the College.
  • Curricula information (including programs of study and general education requirements) for area of advising specialization.
  • Graduation requirements and graduation application procedures.
  • Academic regulations, procedures and deadlines.
  • Academic Progress guidelines and internal process to facilitate improved completion and retention. Required courses (including prerequisite information) for area of advising specialization.
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements for financial aid.
 

Skills:
  • Excellent customer service skills; to include the ability to effectively follow up and follow through.
  • Conduct business with attention to ethical considerations, College policies and procedures, employment law and accreditation guidelines.
 

Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ask searching questions and practice active listening.
  • Work with a variety of student populations in a diverse community.
  • Analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to interpret placement test scores.
  • Develop, plan and implement short and long-range goals. Manage time and establish priorities.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Understand and utilize myService and all available modules.
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for students.
  • Foster a cooperative work environment with supervisor and colleagues.
  • Interpret and effectively use advising information on myService, Aviso and Colleague.
  • Use personal computers and related software applications.
  • Navigate the website to locate advising information (e.g., course information, bulletins, forms, etc)
